Earlier this year, Orkin published its annual Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list. For the second year in a row, New York City makes the list as the second worst in the United States for bed beg infestations. The only other New York location to make the list was Buffalo, at number 42 on the list. The list was compiled from bed bug data for residential and commercial treatments from the pest control company's operations spanning December 1st of 2022 through November 30th of 2023.

Bed bugs are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of people and animals, usually while they sleep. They are experts at hiding, which can make them difficult to find. The presence of bed bugs can be an ongoing annoyance because they often cause itching and loss of sleep for people living or working in, or visiting, an infested property. Some people may also suffer allergic reactions caused by their presence.

“In New York City, tenants have the right to a bed bug-free environment,” said Frank Selamie, President of CTSI. “The insects are specifically named on the list of insects that building owners are legally required to eradicate. In fact, New York City lists bed bugs as a Class B violation. This means they are considered hazardous and landlords have 30 days to correct a problem. Landlords must not only get rid of any infestations, they have to keep the affected units from getting infested again. Bed bugs have also been a problem in everything from five-star hotels and cruise ships, to buses and even trains.”

Due to their small size, bed bugs can be difficult to identify. Fortunately, there are DNA-based testing and monitoring techniques that are exceptionally accurate and sensitive that can be instrumental for identifying a bed bug issue, or for ensuring that an existing infestation has been resolved. CTSI's building science and indoor environmental quality professionals offer testing resources for bed bugs and many other exposure risks. These services not only help to safeguard building occupants, they can also be crucial for identifying a bed bug issue before it becomes an all-out infestation, and all the damaging public relations and financial harm a business can face due to these insects. CTSI also recently sponsored and educational video about bed bugs that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/UFAdXsBi5rs
